History of Brookings-Harbor School District

The first schools in the vicinity were in Whaleshead, Upper Chetco, Harbor, and Carpenterville.

In 1913, before the Chetco River Bridge was built, Miss Bess Clark (the first schoolteacher in Brookings) rowed from Harbor to Brookings.

With 40 students in grades 1-8, classes were held in a millhouse.  It wasn't until 1920 that a 2-room school and gymnasium were built.

In 1924, Brookings High School became a standard 4-year school.
