Proposed new English Language Development texts available for review at the District Office

May 3, 2023

The Brookings-Harbor School District English Language Development Department has proposed the adoption of a new ELD Curriculum, including new textbooks for use starting in the 2023-24 School Year.

All texts are published by National Geographic Cengage Learning Inc.

  • Kinder:    Reach for the Stars A & B (2022)
  • Gr 1 - 5:  Reach Higher 1A - 5A (2020)
  • Gr 6 - 8:  Impact 3 (2022)
  • Gr 9 - 12 Beginner/Intermediate: Life 2 (2020)
  • Gr 9 - 12 Intermediate/Advanced: Pathways 2 (2022)

The proposed texts were reviewed by the ELD coordinator, teachers, and English Language Learner parent group. The proposed texts are approved by the Oregon Department of Education for adoption by Oregon districts and are research-based and aligned to standard for the years 2022-2029. This means that the quality of content and language complexity was evaluated by ODE to be satisfactory and exceeds expectations for student engagement.

The curriculum is K-12, cohesive and inclusive, and includes cross-curricular current topics, with project-based learning. In addition to high-quality print readers and student consumables, there is digital access with videos and interactive online activities and assessments.

A sample set of textbooks and teacher guides are currently on display at the Brookings-Harbor School District office, 629 Easy Street, Brookings, Oregon, 97415. These can be viewed from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday until noon Wednesday, May 17th. If you are able to review the materials, we invite you to provide written feedback using the forms available at the District Office. Online comments can be submitted here.
