Families of Kindergarten and 1st Grade Bus Riders

Dear families,

Please meet your student at the bus stop.

For safety, our drivers do not let kindergarten and 1st grade students off the bus unless a parent or guardian is waiting at the stop, or an older sibling is riding the bus and getting off with them.

If no one is there, here's what happens:

The driver radios the Kalmiopsis Elementary (K-School) office right away.
The office calls you, then your emergency contacts.
Your student stays on the bus and rides the rest of the route while we keep trying to reach someone.

How you can help

If someone different will meet the bus, or your student needs a different stop, call the K-School office at (541) 469-7417 at least 30 minutes before dismissal.
If you know about a change in advance, tell your student's bus driver too.
For an emergency before 4 p.m., call the K-School office. After 4 p.m., call the district office at (541) 469-7443.

We work hard to get every student home safely. Thank you for helping us do that.

Latest Route Updates Sept. 3, 2026

In case of snow or ice ...

On days when snow or icy conditions may make driving our higher elevation bus routes more hazardous, we have "snow day" bus stops where we pick up students farther down the hill than usual to prevent a potentially unsafe trip for the bus. If you live past one of these points, you can bring your child down to the "snow day" bus stop to have them transported to school via bus.

A potential scenario for this is a day when there is snow or ice in these neighborhoods, but not in the town of Brookings or Harbor, so school remains in session. Another scenario where this might occur is if the weather worsens during the school day and school is released early or on time, but climbing these routes are deemed unsafe for our school buses. In all cases, our Transportation Department makes every effort to contact the phone numbers on file for regular bus riding students to alert families of the change to pick-up location and schedule. When school is canceled or closed, the news is posted to our district website front page and sent out via the channels listed on our "School Closures" webpage.

The snow day bus stops are:

Route B: Pick up for Gardner Ridge students will by the Upper Chetco Rural Fire Protection District building "volunteer fire department" located at the intersection of Gardner Ridge and Lewis Creek Road.
Route E: Pick up for students from the upper Carpenterville Road areas will be at the corner of Carpenterville Road and Rainbow Rock Road.
Route E: Pick up for Cape Ferrelo area students will be at the base of Cape Ferrelo road, just before the intersection with Highway 101.

Please call or email the BHSD Transportation Office with questions, and always report a missed bus right away in case the school can swing back with another ride option shortly.
