Proposed Social Studies Curriculum Adoption Available for Public Review

The Brookings-Harbor School District is considering the adoption of new social studies curriculum materials for students in kindergarten through 12th grade. Community members are invited to review the proposed materials and provide feedback before a final decision is made.

Elementary (K-5): McGraw Hill IMPACT Social Studies

The proposed elementary curriculum is McGraw Hill's IMPACT Social Studies series, which offers strong alignment to Oregon Social Sciences Standards across civics and government, economics and financial literacy, geography, and history. The program features inquiry-based instruction, differentiation supports, and both digital and print resources. It also includes the IMPACT Explorer Magazine, a high-interest informational text component that supports literacy integration and classroom discussion. The elementary adoption aligns directly with the district's existing Wonders ELA program, creating cross-curricular literacy integration and increased instructional efficiency.

Secondary (6-12): National Geographic Learning / Cengage

The proposed secondary curriculum is published by National Geographic Learning / Cengage and includes titles such as American Stories (U.S. History) and World History: Voyages of Exploration by Kenneth R. Curtis. The program emphasizes geographic perspective throughout the curriculum, project-based learning, inquiry and civic engagement, and global and historical analysis with real-world application. The secondary adoption includes a commitment to PBL training for middle and high school teachers, with ongoing implementation support and collaborative planning opportunities.

Both curriculum proposals were evaluated using the BHSD adoption rubric, with attention to digital and print access, neutral and unbiased language, community engagement and PBL alignment, geographic and local relevance, differentiation supports, and grade-appropriate materials.
