Important Update on 2024 Summer Foods Program - No Public Program Planned

Dear Brookings-Harbor Community Members,

As Summer Break approaches, we must inform you that the Brookings-Harbor School District will not offer our free summer meals service for youth this summer. There will be no free meals provided at the school sites or the Bite of Brookings (BOB Bus). The decision, influenced by declining participation and staffing challenges, was made with considerable deliberation.

While we regret the absence of our Summer Foods program, state and local resources are available to support families during this period. Eligible students can access additional support through the Summer EBT (S-EBT) program, which provides additional funds for families to purchase groceries. The local Brookings-Harbor Community Helpers Food Bank will also continue offering its Snack Pack program this year

For any questions or to share your thoughts, please contact us at 541-469-7443 or [email protected]. Your feedback is important as we strive to support our community effectively during these changes.

Sincerely,

Helena Chirinian, Superintendent

Community Resources to help meet basic needs

About SNAP

Administered by ODHS, SNAP is a federal program that provides food assistance to approximately 1 million eligible, low-income families and individuals in Oregon, including many older adults and people with disabilities. Oregonians in need can apply for benefits, including SNAP, child care, cash assistance and Medicaid. Learn more at https://govstatus.egov.com/or-dhs-benefits. For local resources in your area, such as food or shelter, please call 2-1-1 or reach out to the state’s Aging and Disability Resource Connection (ADRC) at 1-855-ORE-ADRC or 1-855-673-2372.

Free or Low-Cost Internet Services Available to All Households with Kids at Schools Participating in the Community Eligibility Provision

In the 21st century, high-speed internet is a necessity – especially for students. That’s why the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law created the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) to lower internet costs. The ACP provides eligible households a discount of up to $30 per month off their internet bills (or up to $75 per month for households living on Tribal lands), as well as a one-time discount of up to $100 off an eligible connected device like a laptop, desktop computer, or tablet. In many cases, households can get high-speed internet without paying a dime by choosing a fully covered internet plan. On August 8, 2022, the Food and Nutrition Service published a PartnerWeb announcement to promote participation in the ACP. This letter is a reminder that a household is eligible to participate in the ACP if a child in the household receives free or reduced-price school meals. Therefore, every household with a child attending a school participating in the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) of the National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program is eligible for ACP benefits. Households can learn more and apply for the ACP at GetInternet.gov.
